Rare Pink Diamond Sets World Record in Sotheby's Auction
A rare pink diamond sells for over 45 million dollars, making it the most expensive stone ever sold at auction. The winning bid took place in a jewelry sale in Geneva.

Sotheby's in Switzerland drew some serious bidders on Tuesday -- all vying for a rare pink diamond.

The almost 25 carat gem was the star lot among 550 on the block at the semi-annual jewelry sale in Geneva.

Chairman of Sotheby's Jewelry David Bennett responded to the demand.

[David Bennett, Chairman, Sotheby's Jewelry, Europe and the Middle East]:
"40 million Francs, it's already a record bid."

With a few more bids, the Harry Winston jewel landed the gavel at $45.75 million U.S. dollars, doubling the previous record for the most expensive stone ever sold at auction.

"Unbelievable pink diamond, which I've been following for many years, which I consider to be certainly if not my favorite, one of the most important diamonds ever to come up for auction. Sold for $4,615,800 (USD) -- by far the most, the highest bid ever paid for a jewel at auction."

Top diamond trader Laurence Graff won the coveted gem by telephone.
